White Letter Hairstreak,
Silver-studded Blue, White Admiral, Grayling, Small Heath, Wall Brown Others;
Green Hairstreak, Purple Hairstreak, Silver-washed Fritillary, Purple
Emperor, Chalkhill Blue
(not Devil's Dyke)
Send Sightings by email to
(please make sure you enter a
subject) and they will appear below within a few days. Clicking on
the link should launch your usual email program. If this does
not seem to work just use the email address.
Please include the date, how many of
each butterfly species seen, location
with an ordnance survey grid reference if possible, and your name (if
you want to). If you would like to contribute to the annual survey
please read the notes on the Recording
page.
If you report a
Brimstone this record will also
be passsed to the Brimstone and Buckthorn
project
Regular recorders are urged to use
this sightings page to inform others of interesting sightings, but please do
continue to send all your records to the county recorder, James
Corton, at the end of
the season. This can be done using a simple Excel spreadsheet
amd an example is on the Recording page (click

Popped down to do a Wall Brown
Survey only expecting to see a few on the reserve but they were
out in force again as 16 recorded (12m +4f). Females were
basking in the sun and any advances from a Male were rejected no
egg laying observed. Between the Sluice and the North Hide 7
were recorded ( 5m +2f) the other 9 were out on Petos Marsh (7m
+2f), 3rd Gen Wall Brown are having high numbers recorded hope
this is going to produce a good result for 1st Gen next year? |

When we arrived at Sudbourne Church earlier this afternoon Bill
was already watching a mating pair of Wall Brown
butterflies. Within a few minutes of flying apart the female
started egg-laying by the perimeter wall of the churchyard and
also round a gravestone. This shows how important the
habitat, and management of said habitat, in this churchyard and
around the perimeter wall is to this declining species. (📷

This is a Two-tailed Pasha (📷
photo
click here), a Mediterranean species which
develops on Strawberry trees. It was found by Barbara Bull at
North Cove near Beccles. She rescued it from the water's edge
and identified it later. Origin unknown but likely
released/escaped. (Another possiblity perhaps more likely
than release or escape. The Urban Jungle at Weston just outside
Beccles had a number of mature Arbutus unedo in large pots until
at least recently. The origin of these would have been southern
europe. Regards Keith Knights) |

Suffolk Butterfly
Conservation Event- Trudie's garden Aldeburgh.
The generosity of Trudie opening her garden to the public to
raise funds for Suffolk BC was much appreciated by us and the
many visitors who attended Sunday. I was in charge of
opening the 3 moth traps to display the contents to an eager
public. Over 80 species of moths were recorded and loved
by young and old. Thanks to Trudie for her hospitality,
Peter Maddison for help and running the BC stall and Richard
Stewart for guiding several parties of visitors giving his
expert knowledge of the gardens. Highlights were
definitely the Garden tiger moths (📷

Picking up what Sue Cox said about Commas in Somerleyton, I have
seen them in many more squares this year in NE Suffolk (incl
Beccles and Ringsfield, besides Herringfleet and Blundeston).
Maximum was 10 in TM5095 - Blundeston Marshes and Flixton Decoy
on 23/7 And the second generation of
Wall Browns has been showing up well in the last 10 days.
I have counted them in 7 squares between Somerleyton, Blundeston
Marshes and Lound Heath. Max 4 in TM4997 on 30/7, 1 in
churchyard, 1 in park nearby, 2 in field east of Green Lane. |

Wall Browns 15 sightings, two
of two individuals and 13 of single individuals. Maximum
number seen together 2. I suspect there were a few more
insects involved that this, but there’s no way of knowing for
sure; however, once again this remains a pretty good day of
Wall activity here and compares well with previous years. The
main attraction appeared to be the Knapweed and I saw one Wall
ferociously chase of another from a particularly desirable
flower head. Walking count of garden/platform/ station car

Somerleyton Old Station House garden and platform flowerbed.
Up until today (see below), I have seen no Blue of any sort
here or in the local area, except for a very few Hollies, always
seen singly, at the start of the season. We usually have plenty
of Holly Blues and an occasional visit from a Common Blue or
Brown Argus. Our nearest Common Blue colony was lost last year
due to over-mowing; this has been corrected but the insects have
not returned. A Brown Argus colony which I found last year
has not reappeared this year, possibly due to a change in the
management of the field margin. Also, so far I have only seen
3 new generation Brimstone. This all seems a bit worrying. On
a more positive note, Commas seem to be having a good year. In
the past, as far as I can recall, I’ve only ever seen them at
intervals and only one at a time This year I am seeing them
every day and often two nectaring at the same time. Large
White 5, Small white 1, Green Veined White 1, Peacock 7,
Red Admiral 4, Meadow Brown 6, Gatekeeper 15, Comma 2,

One Wall Brown flying along

cooler and it wasn’t as sunny as the 27th July. When I visited
on the 27th July I was really pleased to see that there was
quite a lot of vegetation (nettles, thistles etc.) on the ground
outside the churchyard wall. When I visited today I was really
disappointed to see that it had been cut. There was just one
small thistle flower left on which the Wall Brown was nectaring.

My attention was attracted by a frantically flying blur of
orangey brown. The insect dived between two planks of the shed
but amazingly I was able to get a photo with my phone. Later on,
identifying the creature from the photo , I realised I was

in on a mating couple in typical Lepidoptera fashion. When I

Wardens are often sent images to id, todays was special, as it
came from Roy, one of my volunteer warden’s and on Lound.
Confirmation by Suffolk Recorder. A
Small Pearl-bordered fritillary, a first
for the County in well over 50 years. (📷
photos
click here) Is this another attempted
reintroduction of a species that was common in Suffolk until the
late 1930s where it was "frequent in Bently Woods". In
Suffolk it was found in damper woodlands and associated areas of
bog where the larval foodplant Common Wood Violet is found.
There is no apparent reason for becoming extinct in the East of
the UK. It is now found in Scotland, Wales and the South
West if England. |

Hard to believe, but our garden had another surprise today, a
single Purple hairstreak. It
posed long enough for me to get binoculars on it, but took off
before I could focus the camera. Don't know where it came from,
as no nearby sites that I know of. A female Common blue was
another first for the year in the garden, with several Peacock,
a Comma, a Small tortoiseshell, Gatekeeper and Large and Small
whites making up the supporting cast. Here's hoping for a return
visitor in tomorrow's heat. |

Suffolk Butterfly
Conservation Theberton Event -The rearranged

with launch of Big Butterfly Count. A group of ultimately 6 of
us recorded 8 Purple Emperor
sightings by lunchtime. Several were coming down to the new
aggregate turning circle for moisture. (📷

all three whites, Brimstone, Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Speckled
Wood, Red Admiral, Comma, Peacock, innumerable
Purple Hairstreaks. Some of
these were also on the aggregate but throughout the wood many
were seen flying low through and just over the sward. So many
that you really had to watch where you walked.
Grayling turned up just as we
reached the high seat. Just one White Admiral was seen, in the
afternoon. |

The warden at Minsmere asked me to report a sighting of a
Purple Emperor at Minsmere
today. My husband and I with another couple saw it when walking
from the woods towards the wildlife lookout hide. We were
looking at a Silver
Washed Fritillary when I saw a butterfly low on an alder
tree behind us . At first we thought white admiral but realised
it was bigger. It was a purple emperor. It fluttered around in
front of us gradually working its way up the tree until it was
out of sight (about 2 minutes) We were able to confirm the
sighting by looking at Butterflies of Britain app. The warden
said that one had not been seen at Minsmere for 6 years. All
four of us were very excited!! |

I’m happy to report some recent sightings at Northfield Wood,
Onehouse. I’ve visited a few times recently and on Sunday 26/6 I
had an amazing encounter! I had already seen several Silver-washed
Fritillary, many ringlets, lots of the “usual suspects”
(speckled Wood, green veined white, red admiral, comma, meadow
brown) and a few White Admiral.
But my “bucket list tick” was the
Purple Emperorwhich appeared out of nowhere whilst I was
trying to photograph a red admiral! It landed on my leg, so I
quickly took a few pictures, although my phone didn’t do it
justice and failed to catch the beautiful iridescence I
witnessed. (📷

click here) I was surprised by its size! The weather
conditions were good, sunny and warm, but quite breezy, and I
think it was around midday-1 pm. In addition, I saw a
small Heath at Winston,
Debenham, around 2 weeks ago, flying low to the ground in a
paddock. |

click here of closed wings of a Meadow Brown with two white
pupils in each forewing eye spot. No white, or black, spots on
hindwing. Overall hindwing pattern of Meadow Brown. Last
year's photos of Gatekeepers on site each had white spots on
hindwings. Last year's and this year's (so far) photos of other
Meadow Browns on site have single pupils in forewing eyespots.
Are 2 pupils in forewing eye spots often noted in Suffolk Meadow
Browns? This is a known aberration, ab bioculata, and
is noted on the UK Butterflies website but there are no
references to how common it is. None of the identification
guides mention it so presumably it is uncommon. The spots on
the hind wings are quite variable and a particular pattern seems
to be regional or confined to a local population. E B Ford used

16.30 hours today..20th June..whilst assisting with a Eurasian
Curlew survey I was walking a "ride" of bare ground in a field
of potatoes just north of Sapiston village when I was alerted to
a large fast flying butterfly which I first thought might be a
White Admiral. It flashed past me and I spun round ready
to quickly retrace my steps whilst praying that it would land
reasonably near. The butterfly mostly held its wings
closed with occasional wing flicks. As I got closer I
caught just a hint of an iridescent sheen as the wing opened a
little. I was able to get within a metre of the butterfly
and then it opened its wings fully..a stunning male
Purple Emperor..I
was gobsmacked !. It was constantly probing in wet mud areas at
the edge of the otherwise hard baked sandy soil and particularly
on tiny patches of manure from early treatment of the field
prior to planting. Sadly I had neither a camera or mobile with
me. Temperature was 22 degrees celsius and not a breath of
wind. There are 3 large mature Oak trees some 80 metres away
and one maybe contains a favoured "master" canopy habitat ? We
are surrounded by private land to which I have special access
hence I am unable to give more location details but needless to
say I shall be there again soon armed with my camera. If I am
lucky again I will of course enter a further report. |

attempted introductions in Landseer Park thsi has no chance of
establishing. The only colony in the UK is on the Isle of

At TM45736920 - Only 4 Silver-studded
Blues at the quarry but most of the heather seems to be
dying. Also Meadow Brown 2, Small
Heath 2. Further along the path at TM46116926 Large
Skipper 1, Meadow Brown 2. On the path at TM46196941,
which is fairly new regenerated heathland at least 12
Silver-studded Blues so they
seem to have colonised this relatively new area. Also
Small Heath 6. Across
the Dunwich Road at TM46217007 I was surprised to find another
Silver-studded Blues not an
area close to any existing colony. At TM45596964
Small Heath 6.There were very
few butterflies despite the warm sunny weather perhaps because
there are very few flowers apart from the heather and a few
brambles. |

For information as I already record my sightings on the Garden
Butterfly Survey for this year. On Friday 6 May 2022 I
noted two Common Blue butterflies. The male a couple of
times flying over the fence into my back garden. The
female stayed on the patch of waste land beyond the fence moving
occasionally to visit flowers of plantains. No apparent
interest in each other over say ten minutes viewing.
'Bare' patch of ground with short grasses, mosses, black
meddick, vetch etc growing on base of asphalt left by builders 5
years ago. [Common Blues (up to 9 on one occasion) present
there during 2021 from early June to late September.]
Other species noted during varibly breezy sunny warm day (6 May
2022): One Peacock sunning itself on fence, one male
Green-veined White patrolling. Up to four patrolling Orange Tip
males at any one time during the day. |
