The Branch is always grateful for butterfly records and a
recording form can be downloaded from the Recording
page. We are always interested in
sightings of any butterflies in any location in Suffolk but we are particularly grateful for records away from the
coast and information on the following species:
BAP species; Dingy Skipper,
White Letter Hairstreak,
Silver-studded Blue, White Admiral, Grayling, Small Heath, Wall Brown Others;
Green Hairstreak, Purple Hairstreak, Silver-washed Fritillary, Purple
Emperor, Chalkhill Blue
(not Devil's Dyke)
Send Sightings by email to
(please make sure you enter a
subject) and they will appear below within a few days. Clicking on
the link should launch your usual email program. If this does
not seem to work just use the email address.
Please include the date, how many of
each butterfly species seen, location
with an ordnance survey grid reference if possible, and your name (if
you want to). If you would like to contribute to the annual survey
please read the notes on the Recording
page.
If you report a
Brimstone this record will also
be passsed to the Brimstone and Buckthorn
project
Regular recorders are urged to use
this sightings page to inform others of interesting sightings, but please do
continue to send all your records to the county recorder, James
Corton, at the end of
the season.
Coronavirus - Butterfly Recording
Please follow the latest advice from the government. Follow social
distancing rules and wear a mask where necessary.
If
visiting Purdis Heath, Pipers Vale and Landseer Park
(or any other site for that matter) please keep to footpaths and
recognised tracks and do not trample heather, ant nests or any
other vegetation. There are plenty of places where you can
see butterflies from the paths. Keep dogs on a lead.

Peacock butterfly seen flying strongly at the North Bushes at
Minsmere in very mild conditions mid- morning today, 30th
December 2021. It was not seen to land but there is no doubt
regarding its ID - I had at first considered that it might be a
Red Admiral until I saw it clearly at close range and through
binoculars!

Very surprised to spot in the gloom a Peacock butterfly flying
strongly around the car park at Sainsbury's Thetford.
Although this location is in Norfolk, for recording purposes the
old county boundaries are used following the Little Ouse which
places this sighting in Suffolk. |

Great atmospheric conditions for Butterflies today. In
Rendlesham Forest at North edge of Woodbridge Airfield, a large
rabble of Graylings at least
250 in number, many dancing in
swirls of 10 or so, on and amongst the Pine trunks. The
buddleia avenue on the byway access attracting 400+ fresh Red
Admirals, 100+ Peacocks, plus a few fresh Commas and Painted
Ladies and a Couple of pale Silver
washed Fritillaries. In other areas, Gatekeepers
feeding on Ragwort, many Graylings
on most paths and tracks. A few fresh Small Coppers, one
tidy looking White Admiral.
Some worn Brown Argus's, Meadow Browns and Ringlets still
hanging on. In this profusion, and worryingly, I noted
just two Small Tortoiseshells. |

you all know the event was pretty good. Just 5 attendees after 3

forecast although one car broke down. As it happened, the

In 90 minutes across midday, saw meadow brown, gatekeeper,
common blue, brown argus, red admiral, painted lady, peacock,
comma, small (or Essex?) skipper, brimstone, large, small and
green-veined whites, clouded yellow (just the one) and speckled
wood. Was looking for brown hairstreak of course. Possible but
unconfirmed sightings of three individuals looking rather like
gatekeeper, but much faster and different flight style at just
above head height. Site very floriferous and looking good. |

A circular walk around the Fynn Valley this morning produced 2
Commas, 1 Small Heath, 1
Peacock, and reasonable numbers of Meadow Browns and Gatekeepers
with a few Speckled Woods and Ringlets. However, the most
significant sightings were of uncountable Red Admirals with
particularly large numbers on Buddleias in Little Bealings
gardens. Also of note was a number of Banded Desmoiselle
damselflies, mostly females, near the Fynn behind the
semi-derelict farm buildings. |

I live in Woodbridge next to Fen Meadow (postcode IP12 4HA). On
17th July at 09:40 there was a single
Purple Hairstreak in my garden. Not usually a garden
butterfly, but the garden is adjacent to a large oak tree on the
boundary of the Fen Meadow open space, which also holds some
other oak trees. I have seen Purple Hairstreak in the garden on
at least one occasion in each of the last 3 summers. Also on Fen
Meadow, I have had my attention drawn to
White-Letter Hairstreak by my
friend Guy Padfield. The adults fly around the top of the elm
trees, though they're difficult to identify and I haven't had a
clear view myself this year. In some previous years I have seen
individuals at lower height (including a couple of times in my
garden). Guy has obtained photos. I tried to put the PH into the
big butterfly count but there isn't an option for that. Best

In addition to the numbers of butterflies (Dark Green
Fritillaries, Marbled Whites, Chalk-hill Blues, etc.) which I
saw along Devil's Dyke this morning, I noticed the following
along the much smaller dyke about fifty or so yards to the east
of the main dyke: Dark Green Fritillary 3, Chalk-hill Blue 4,
Marbled White 4. The OS map grid is TL614618 and appears to show
the county boundary running between this earthwork and the main
dyke itself. I am not 100% sure about whether you regard these
sightings as part of the main Cambridgeshire populations or
whether they do, in fact, occur in Suffolk? (For
recording purposes this is in Cambridgeshire. Recording
counties follow old boundaries to ensure historical comparisons
can be made. The boundary runs NW to SE through the
grandstand) |

I have just had an extraordinary hour in Exning. Glebe Rise is
a new estate and did not look promising last year. I arrived
about 4.00 and was immediately struck by the abundance of
flowers and spotted a Six-spot Burnet, then another, then
another, and that continued until I gave up at 20. I have never
seen so many. The butterflies were not all that special but the
number of moths I disturbed was. I think it is well worth a
moth specialist visiting. Caterpillar and Cocoon photographed

Saw my first meadow brown of the year at Earl Soham OS 236639
(footpath off Bedfield Rd), with several more on the footpath
walk past White House Farm copse and along 'Windy Ridge' to
Windwhistle and back towards the centre of the village. Most
seen at any one time = 3. Also 2x speckled wood, 1 x red admiral
and 1 white (probably large white). I try to do this walk
several times a week as it is usually good for range of
butterflies. Last year, during the warmer May, I saw green
hairstreak and later on, white letter hairstreak on this walk.
No GH this year, sadly. |

Wall Brown 1 First this year.
Two sightings, one mid morning in the garden, one late afternoon
on the station platform. Brimstone 2, First female seen this
year. Multiple sightings of males throughout day but always one
at a time. Orange Tip 2, 1 female plus multiple sightings of
solo males. Red Admiral 1, Small White 1, Holly Blue 1.
It seems to me that Holly Blues and Orange Tips are doing ok,
and we seem to have cornered the market in Brimstones. Other
species are later and scarcer than in previous years. |

Species count seems quite low and so do numbers. However, I'm
having frequent sighting of Holly Blue each day, and very
frequent sightings of Brimstone males. Usually only one at a
time so the reports (31 & 29 May) probably don't reflect the
actual numbers of insects around. Painted Lady 1, Large
White 1 (first sighting this year), Brimstone m 2, Holly Blues
1, Holly Blues 2 looked like a failed mating attempt.

SBBC Event -
At last! a fine sunny start to the day (Sat 29th May). A troupe
of 7 members turned up for this pre- planned field meeting.
Just enjoying the fresh air and sunshine was a pleasure.
In the morning, the whole group saw 8 species - 9 if we count
the Green Hairstreaks seen by
Trevor before we set off: Orange-tip plentiful, small white,
Small Heath, small copper,
speckled wood, brimstone (just 1) Peacocks, and a holly blue,
plus Green Hairstreak, making
a nice tally of 9 for the morning, not counting the single
Cinnabar moth. However, nothing was in abundance, and the
forest had a "silent spring" air about it. After all, May
had been an awful month! . In the afternoon, Sandy and Tony Fox
moved south in pursuit of Dingy Skippers. In the vicinity
of the Archery club, they encountered two
Dingy Skippers, followed, a
bit further on, by another two (still in the vicinity of the
Archery club. As far as I am aware, this is the first DS
sighting of the year. (First sighted by Trevor Goodfellow on
9 & 12 May and Bill Stone on 23 May - SBBC) |

A Silver Y has just emerged from a bunch of mint we received as
part of a fruit basket in early February (from a Bungay fruit
shop). We watched the caterpillar feeding and growing, then
binding 2 leaves together to shelter and change....the adult
emerged today, so now we know what it is! We will release it
outdoors, though doubt it will like the mid-March conditions. |
