20 Aug SBBC Suffolk Event- SWT Trimley Marshes - This BC Suffolk event focussed on the fantastic Suffolk Wildlife Trust reserve at Trimley Marshes.  The reserve is a Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI), covers over 200 acres and includes a variety of marsh and wetland habitats.  One of the best ways to enjoy the reserve is to undertake a circular walk (almost 6 miles) and this is what myself and 7 BC Branch members did today.  Unfortunately, the weather was not great with the after effects of Hurricane Gert causing strong westerly winds and, at times, thick cloud cover.  However, we started the walk in bright sunshine and following the path down towards the River Orwell we soon found our first butterflies of the day with Large White, Small White and Green-veined White being seen alongside the field margins.  A stop at a field corner provided views of sunlit oaks and a single Purple Hairstreak was seen here.  Further stops along the path by sunny bramble thickets and hedgerows led to us adding Speckled Wood, Holly Blue and Red Admiral to the day list.  On reaching the track to the reserve itself we took a short detour up to the Fagbury Viewpoint.  Along this track were dozens of Small Whites along with several Large and Green-veined Whites and more Speckled Woods.  We also added a few more Purple Hairstreaks, our first Peacock and a Small Tortoiseshell.  A butterfly walk is never just about butterflies and we spent some time watching a large gathering of dragonflies hawking in a sheltered corner.  Checking carefully through these revealed the vast majority to be Migrant Hawkers with several Common and Ruddy Darters, a few Southern Hawkers and Emperors.  Of note, many pairings of Migrant Hawkers were seen, appearing almost as black balls as they flew around.  A bonus butterfly species was also seen in the shape of a late White Admiral.  Returning to the main track we carried on to the reserve walking slowly along the path ensuring that all butterflies seen were identified.  This concerted effort led to us adding Common Blue, Painted Lady, Comma, Meadow Brown and Gatekeeper.  Reaching the Visitor Centre allowed us some protection from the increasing wind and cooling temperatures and we decided to stop here for lunch.  After lunch, we pressed on and continued to walk around the reserve seeing a few more species in the form of Small and Large White, Red Admiral, Common Blue, Holly Blue and Speckled Wood.  At the start of the walk I had set the target species of the day as Clouded Yellow and we came across several very suitable fields with clover and creeping thistle near Loompit Lake and Grimston Hall.  Sadly, none were seen but we certainly tried out best to find one.  By the time we returned to the cars we had seen 15 species of butterfly which all agreed was a good total given the weather  SWT Trimley Marshes   Bill Stone

13 Aug SBBC Event at RSPB North Warren   A sunny start to the morning encouraged into flight a good number of Common Blues on the coast path from Aldeburgh, and many Meadow Browns and Gatekeepers were identified on the path across the reserve.  Later, however, increasing cloud cover deterred butterflies from flying and although Small Heath, Small Copper and Grayling were seen, none were as plentiful as had been hoped.  Red Admiral, Peacock, Painted Lady, Comma, Small Tortoiseshell, Speckled Wood, Ringlet and Large, Small and unidentified whites were all recorded, as well as 6 Hummingbird Hawk-moths and several Six-spot Burnet moths.  In the end, the somewhat disappointing number of 15 butterfly species was outnumbered by the 18 participants on the walk….who nevertheless had an enjoyable day. 17 Jun BC Suffolk Walk- Felixstowe Ferry- I led today’s walks around the Felixstowe Ferry area and was accompanied by three other BC members.  Despite the high temperatures the weather was unsettled being periods of bright sunny spells but with long lasting overcast skies and a stiff SE wind.  The morning walk explored some of the gardens around the hamlet, taking in the Millennium Green and river path up to and including the Kingsfleet River.  The most abundant butterflies by far were Meadow Browns and the golden skippers particularly Essex and Small Skipper. Other species encountered in small numbers were: Large Skipper, Large White, Small White, Green-veined White, Painted Lady, Red Admiral, Ringlet, Common Blue.  In addition to the butterfly species seen numerous dragonfly species were seen with Emperor being particularly abundant.  Other highlights of this walk included a flyover Bittern, calling Water Rail, some very handsome male Reed Buntings and numerous warblers and hirundines.  After lunch we explored the Tomline Wall which runs between the golf course sand again enjoyed good numbers of Meadow Brown and both Essex and Small Skippers.  Whilst within the wooded section at the Golf Club House end we found a few new species for the day in the form of Speckled Wood, some pristine Comma, Holly Blue and a very faded Green Hairstreak.  Returning along the seawall we came across a very faded Painted Lady and more Meadow Browns and skippers.  On reaching the cars and concluding the walk we had achieved a total of 16 butterfly species. It was very enjoyable day with some great company Felixstowe Ferry Area TM3236, 3237, 3238, 3138 Bill Stone,  Suffolk Butterfly Recorder

26 May SBBC Event - Dingy Skipper Survey - Barnham Cross Common  Today’s walk focussed on the area of heathland and common grazing area either side of the A134 just south of Thetford.  This was an area where Dingy Skipper had occurred in the past but for which few recent records existed.  As four of us assembled in the car park incredibly a single Dingy Skipper was seen on the ground in front of us and then almost stood on!  It was seen briefly before flying through the tree line and out onto the heath within the grounds of RAF Barnham camp.  This is likely to be a wanderer from one of the colonies that exist within the camp grounds albeit some 250m away.  Following this exciting start, we then moved onto the eastern side of the heath close to the Little Ouse River and enjoyed sightings of dragonflies and damselflies.  Species seen included: Banded and Beautiful Demoiselle, Hairy Hawker, Broad-bodied Chaser and Blue-tailed Damselfly.  Walking back over the heath revealed numerous butterflies with Brimstone, Green-veined White, Red Admiral, Peacock, Common Blue, Small Copper and Small Heath all seen.  No Dingy Skippers were seen but we were kept busy with look-alikes in the shape of Mother Shipton and Burnet Companion moths.  Crossing back over the A134 to the main heathland and common we undertook a circular walk finding several new species for the day in the form of Holly Blue, Large White, Orange-tip, Speckled Wood and Green Hairstreak.  Unfortunately, no more Dingy Skippers were found but the single record was an important one.  Final butterfly list: Dingy Skipper, Brimstone, Large White, Green-veined White, Orange-tip, Green Hairstreak, Small Copper, Common Blue, Holly Blue, Red Admiral, Peacock, Speckled Wood and Small Heath. 24 May SBBC Event - Dingy Skipper Survey-- Kings Forest (Archery and Wordwell)  Today’s walk explored the Archery Ranges within the central part of the eastern Kings Forest and the Wordwell area in the south.  The weather was superb, very warm with bright sunshine and a light south-westerly wind.  Our group of four walked through the archery rides and despite the recent forest operations we soon found our first Dingy Skippers.  The whole site and surrounding rides were carefully explored and by the time we finished a total of 32 Dingy Skippers had been counted.  Thankfully, the forest was quiet in respect of ongoing forestry work and so we were able to head south to explore the Wordwell Ride and areas of clear-fell nearby.  Dingy Skippers were soon located and a thorough check of the area added another 17 Dingy Skippers to the day count.  On conclusion of the walk, a total of 49 Dingy Skippers were recorded which is a superb number.  On a couple of occasions, male and female Dingy Skippers were observed in courtship flight and so were, hopefully, on the way to producing the next generation.  In addition to Dingy Skipper another 14 species of butterflies were recorded: Brimstone, Small White, Green-veined White, Orange-tip, Green Hairstreak, Small Copper, Brown Argus, Common Blue, Holly Blue, Red Admiral, Painted Lady, Peacock, Speckled Wood and Small Heath).  Several day-flying moths were also enjoyed during the walk including Cinnabar, Latticed Heath, Common Heath, Mother Shipton, Burnet Companion and the migrant, Silver-Y.  In addition, to the butterflies and moths we also enjoyed some wonderful bird song and also a close-encounter with a large Grass Snake! 22 May SBBC Event - Dingy Skipper Survey-  The first of the planned surveys took place in bright sunshine and warm temperatures and was in complete contrast to the grim weather experienced in previous years.  Our group of nine walked Chalk Lane in the Kings Forest in an easterly direction, finding 4 Dingy Skippers, before turning north after 500m.  Here we took a northerly ride before taking another ride east.  This ride looked very promising and very soon we found a further 8 Dingy Skippers as we continued to walk east.  After approximately 1 km we took a southerly ride and re-joined Chalk Lane this time heading back in a westerly direction seeing another 4 Dingy Skippers.  As well as a final total of 16 Dingy Skippers the group also recorded another 15 species of butterflies (Brimstone, Large White, Small White, Green-veined White, Orange-tip, Green Hairstreak, Small Copper, Common Blue, Holly Blue, Red Admiral, Painted Lady, Peacock, Comma, Speckled Wood and Small Heath).  The Common Blues were freshly emerged males in pristine condition and several “dog-fights” were witnessed between this species and the feisty Small Coppers and immaculate (and numerous) Small Heaths.  The Green Hairstreaks were the first of the year for many of the group and it was good to see many Orange-tips including some females egg laying on Garlic-mustard.  A few high flying Painted Lady butterflies passed through at speed, whereas, the Red Admirals were showing the nettle beds close attention although none were seen to lay eggs.  Numerous species of day-flying moths were found including the two species sometimes confused with Dingy Skippers namely, Mother Shipton and Burnet companion Chalk Lane   Bill Stone,  Suffolk Butterfly Recorder

7 May SBBC Event; Butterfly Walk King's Forest - The weather turned out nicer than expected, so we (7 plus me) saw more than I had anticipated.  We saw 8 species including my first Small Heath of the year.  Everyone happy, especially with being able to watch Orange-tips courting, and then pairing in front of our eyes, and some good Green Hairstreak views at the end of the walk (which was strewn with loads of forestry STAY OUT signs due to felling work, happily not on Sundays).  We just reached the northern edge of the Archery area, which was active.  Although we did not see any Dingy Skippers in the morning, Tony Fox, with his wife Sandy went on to look for Dingy Skipper after we dispersed.  Prospects looked quite good between clouds.  Tony reported back that they saw 8 Dingy Skippers close to the archery area, and one Peacock, bringing the total for the day to 10 species. plus Small White, Green-veined White, Brimstone, Speckled Wood, Small Copper KIng's Forest   Rob Parker

29 Apr "I visited the Kings Forest area today (29th) and was amazed at how much forestry work is being carried out throughout the eastern section (east of B106).  Forestry operations will effectively restrict access to key areas for the Dingy Skipper for the foreseeable future and anyone planning a visit to the area will need to adhere to signage in place.  That said I did find 3 Dingy Skippers in the area, my first ever April sightings in Suffolk".
